Chentian Zhang is a new media artist and photographer specializing in installation and interactive art that reflects people’s inner mind—emotion, memory, and perception. Inspired by technology and nature, his work blends visual storytelling with spatial experience to invite reflection.

Virtual Reality and Real Virtuality

A VR performance-installation tests what counts as reality. The artist lives in a room rebuilt in both real space and 3D virtual space, with Oculus hand tracking so what is seen can be touched. Two live projections (VR feed and a headset-mounted camera view) plus a recorded loop invite viewers to reconstruct meaning.

Mickey

A hidden Mickey Mouse figurine sits behind an inaccessible curtain. Six cameras show partial live angles on six screens arranged in a circle, so no one can see everything at once. The piece questions whether the image is trustworthy and uses Mickey, a mass-consumption symbol, to evoke Baudrillard’s hyperreality.

Simulacra and Simulation

A code-based visual work that turns identity markers into machine-readable symbols (QR codes, barcodes, and data marks). By removing the human likeness, it examines how systems reduce a person to records—and how such representations can begin to stand in for reality.

Photography

A series of landscape and night-sky photographs made in remote, uncontrolled environments—mountains, glaciers, and star-filled skies. Each image is planned around weather, terrain, and light, then executed under real constraints. I use composition, scale, and perspective to guide attention and create an immersive feeling within a single frame.
